Named for W.W. Brookings, an early and tireless promoter of this section of South Dakota, this town is the seat of Brookings County and the home of South Dakota State University, the largest institution of higher learning in the state. On campus, you'll find the McCrory Gardens and South Dakota Arboretum, one of the premier small botanical gardens in the country. The grounds feature 14 theme gardens including a children's maze and formal rose garden. The Agricultural Heritage Museum traces the state's rich farming and ranching history with displays of antique equipment and historic pioneer buildings. The Art Museum has works of Sioux tribal art and works by noted South Dakota artists Harvey Dunn and Oscar Howe.
