This gold-rush town preserves its riotous past with restored buildings, colorful characters, and plenty of legalized gambling. It still looks like the town of Preacher Smith, Seth Bullock, Calamity Jane, and Wild Bill Hickok, who was shot in the back in Saloon #10. Deadwood was established in 1876 and gives you a real flavor for life in the gold rush era, allowing you to stroll through five blocks that look as if time has stood still since 1870s.

Mr. Hickok, Ms. Calamity, and others of those daring pioneer days are buried on the hillside in Mount Moriah Cemetery. The reenacted Trial of Jack McCall is dramatic and engaging. Adams Memorial Museum, which has a vast collection of Deadwood historical mementos, is outstanding. Pan for gold at Broken Boot Gold Mine. During the "Days of '76" celebration, staged annually on the last full weekend of July, cowboys and Indians parade through town to take part in one of the wildest rodeos of the West. Deadwood is also the home of approximately 80 casinos. Gaming here includes limited-stakes blackjack and poker, as well as slot machines. Tour Adams House, a classical Victorian Queen Anne-style mansion (1892) with all original contents intact. Decorated with the original decorations during Christmastime.
