Author Laura Ingalls Wilder made De Smet famous as the "Little Town on the Prairie." You can visit the Surveyors' House, where 12-year-old Laura and her family stayed during the winter of 1879. The Ingalls homestead site is still surrounded by some of the cottonwood trees that "Pa" planted over one hundred years ago. The "house that Pa built" in 1887 and the numerous other sites around town bring back strong reminiscences for fans of Wilder's books about her days on the prairie.
De Smet holds its annual Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant beginning the weekend after the 4th of July and for the two following weekends (Friday through Sunday) for 3 weekends total. The old railroad depot has displays on De Smet's early history and area wildlife.
