Once an important gold mining town, modern Hill City, the self-styled "Heart of the Black Hills," is a center for tourism and timber. The town is home of the 1880 Train on which summertime passengers take a scenic round trip to Keystone, 11 miles away. Pulled by a classic Baldwin steam engine, the train follows the original route of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CB&Q) over very steep gradients through Black Hills National Forest. Visit the Black Hills Museum of Natural History to see an extensive collection of fossils, dinosaur replicas, and minerals, or try your hand at panning for gold at Wade's Gold Mill and Mining Museum. Snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, and hunters will find much to do in Hill City as well. Nearby, Harney Peak -- at 7242 feet -- is both the highest point in South Dakota and the highest peak east of the Rockies.
