A gold miner's wife suggested that her husband name his rich strike after her, so he called it the Holy Terror. She was placated somewhat by the $70,000 a week in gold that the mine produced. You can still pan for gold and take the underground tour at Big Thunder Gold Mine. Take the Rushmore Aerial Tramway up the mountains for a view of magnificent Mount Rushmore National Memorial, then for an exciting ride back down, hop aboard the Alpine slide. The 1880 Train takes passengers on a 22-mile round trip over steep and scenic landscape between Keystone and Hill City. Six miles east, Rushmore Cave offers one-hour tours of stunning underground rooms and passages. Also visit the Borglum Historical Center to learn more about the accomplishments of the man who created Mount Rushmore.
