Founded in 1906 on the site of a former Indian village, Mobridge takes its name literally from the Missouri (Mo.) River bridge that was then being constructed here. The town is now on the eastern shore of Lake Oahe, created with the construction of Oahe Dam.
On a bluff overlooking Lake Oahe, three miles south of US 12, the Sioux leader Sitting Bull is buried. His final resting place is surmounted by a monument sculpted by Korczak Ziolkowski. Nearby is a monument to Sacajawea, the Shoshone woman who guided Lewis and Clark.
Also in Mobridge, you'll find murals by noted Indian artist Oscar Howe that tell the history and ceremonies of the Sioux, and the Klein Museum which exhibits historic rooms and Indian artifacts. There is shopping on the historic main street.
