The capital of South Dakota is pronounced "peer." A small town in the heart of an agricultural area, Pierre became the state capital in 1889. You can tour the beautifully restored State Capitol which features murals, historical displays, and marble staircases in the rotunda. The South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center has displays on the development of the state including the pioneer era, Indian culture before the coming of white men, and life in the 20th century.
The Discovery Center and Aquarium has hands-on exhibits and native fish displays. Nearby Lake Oahe, formed by the Oahe Dam on the Missouri River, offers fishing and other outdoor recreation. Tours of the dam and its power plant are available by appointment.
