The perfect start to any visit to the Black Hills is the Journey Museum in Rapid City. It tells the story of the area through interactive exhibits. Housed within the journey Museum is The Sioux Indian Museum, perhaps the finest of the state's many Indian exhibits, covering the history and present-day arts of the Sioux. Also of note is the excellent Museum of Geology on the campus of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.Enjoy a visit to Dinosaur Park where life-size prehistoric reptiles of the area have been re-created in concrete, and to Storybook Island, a community park for children. At Reptile Gardens many varieties of reptiles are shown in settings like their natural habitats, and children may ride on live giant tortoises. Stavkirke, a careful reproduction of an 840-year-old church in Norway, is an ingenious wood construction, with a many-peaked roof and intricate carvings. The Cleghorn Springs Fish Hatchery appeals to travelers; and Bear Country, a drive-through park, has many varieties of wild animals, as well as bears, roaming freely, with the people remaining in their cars. Also visit Dahl Arts Center, the Air and Space Museum, and other area caves, or try a cowboy show and dinner.
