Set in a valley at the northern edge of the Black Hills, Spearfish boasts of a turn-of-the-century character and picturesque main street. Be sure to drive through Spearfish Canyon Scenic By-way (Route 14A) which begins at the edge of town. Comedies, musicals and dramas take to the boards at the elegantly-decorated Matthews Opera House, constructed in 1906. The High Plains Western Heritage Center displays western art, pioneer buildings, and live animals. The Black Hills Passion Play is also performed here. The play, 400 years older than Oberammergau's, was brought to the U.S. by refugees from Luenen, Germany, in the 1930s. Performed in an outdoor amphitheatre that seats 6,400 people, it presents the last seven days of the life of Christ.
