The home of Dakota State University, Madison nestles into the rolling farmland of eastern South Dakota. Just west of town, Prairie Village, a replica pioneer town of 50 restored buildings, offers antiques, a steam merry-go-round dating from 1893, and old-fashioned steam trains. A steam threshing jamboree takes place here in August. Five nearby lakes and two state recreation areas provide plenty of opportunity for hunting, fishing and camping. For a taste of regional history, visit the Smith Zimmermann State Museum and the Depot Railroad Museum.
