Founded in 1881, Abilene is a cultural, cattle ranching, and educational center on the central Texas plains. Pioneer days are recalled at Fort Phantom Hill northeast of the city, where a few original buildings of what was once part of a line of defenses across Texas still remain. You can also visit Buffalo Gap Historic Village where a collection of authentic 19th-century buildings has been assembled.
The city's cultural life is sustained at The Grace Museum in the historic Grace Hotel. There you'll find an art museum, children's museum, and local history museum. Abilene's historic downtown is also home to the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature, the 12th Armored Division Memorial Museum, the Center for Contemporary Arts, and the restored Paramount Theatre, circa 1930. The city is also home to Dyess Air Force Base where Linear Air Park houses 32 aircraft spanning the history of the Air Force from World War II to the Gulf War. Also worth a stop is the Abilene Zoological Gardens. Experience the big picture of the Texas frontier (1780-1800) at Frontier Texas! in downtown. The story comes to life in this new multi-media facility, told by historical holographic figures (early Abilene residents).
