Set on the rugged plains of the Texas Panhandle, Amarillo is a Western town of cowboys, cattle ranches, and country music. The Big Texan Steak Ranch, home of the 72-oz. steak dinner (eat it in an hour and it's free) and the American Quarter Horse Heritage Center & Museum informs and entertains. The Don Harrington Discovery Center and Space Theater has a treasure house of hands-on exhibits, a digital space theater (a 'planetarium' dome with enhanced graphics and video presentations), and Aquariums of the World.
About 20 miles south of town, Palo Duro Canyon slashes through the landscape, cutting 1,000 feet deep and opening up 90 million years of geology in its color-splashed walls. Here in a handsome outdoor amphitheater, a historical musical drama of the 1880s, is presented in the summer. Down in the canyon, families camp, picnic, hike, ride horseback, and go mountain biking.
