Austin takes its live music seriously -- this is, after all, the "Live Music Capital of the World." More than 100 establishments cater to country, blues, rock, jazz, folk, and Latin music aficionados. You'll find bands and solo acts playing somewhere every night of the week. The diverse musical nightlife is largely concentrated in two areas: the Warehouse District west of downtown and in the neighborhood around Sixth and Congress.
As locals tell it, the king of country dance halls in Austin is the south side's Broken Spoke, a landmark club where major country and western stars appear fairly often. Sample Austin's folk and bluegrass scene and dine on some great rubbed ribs at Artz Rib House, a popular barbecue joint with bands nightly.
At Antone's, the city's premiere blues club, touring big-name entertainers occasionally drop in by surprise and get up on stage for jam sessions with the featured performers of the night. In the Warehouse District, jazz lovers flock to Cedar Street to hear top local acts. The celebrated Continental Club features live acts from all genres and keeps its typically packed house dancing until the wee hours.
Austin's climate makes for some great outdoor music venues. See who's playing and catch a show at The Backyard, where you can see top national talent at an amphitheater nestled in the hills under a cascade of old oak trees. For an evening in an enchanting indoor performance venue with an interesting atmosphere and good acoustics, check out the concert schedule at the 19th-century Paramount Theater.
