Like its nearby neighbor of Chappell Hill, this agricultural center retains much of its 19th-century character. In Brenham's restored Main Street District, you'll find Victorian-era buildings housing restaurants and shops, while in Chappell Hill, ten miles to the east, you can visit the 1850s stage coach stop, the Old Rock Store, and Browning Plantation.
Popular attractions near Brenham include the miniature horse farm at the Monastery of St. Clare, where you can see and pet these fascinating miniature animals, and the Blue Bell Creameries ice cream factory tours.
Also of historical interest are the Giddings-Wilkins House, an antebellum mansion dating from 1843, and farther to the east the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. 8 miles west, in Burton, is a fully-restored operating 1914 farmer's gin. It's on the National Register of Historic Places.
