The state's southernmost city, Brownsville is an international seaport. The superb 31-acre Gladys Porter Zoo has animals in their natural settings. Many rare and endangered species are on display; see the children's zoo, aquarium, herpetarium, and free-flight aviary.
Across the Rio Grande is Matamoros, Mexico, a colorful city with many shops, restaurants, and nightclubs. A toll bridge links the two cities; valid identification, but no passport, is needed for U.S. citizens to enter from the United States. East of Brownsville is Boca Chica Beach. The Children's Museum of Brownsville (across from Gladys Porter Zoo, inside Dean Porter Park) has interactive stations where children can build projects, navigate a shrimp boat, and "shop" at El Mercado area.
