Del Rio owes its existence to the huge San Felipe Springs, which drew settlers here in the late 1800s; water from the natural springs are still used to irrigate much of the area. With construction of the Amistad Dam across the Rio Grande in 1969, Del Rio and the adjoining Mexican town of Ciudad Acuna became headquarters for the vast Amistad International Reservoir. The Amistad National Recreation Area on the U.S. side of the reservoir includes facilities for boating, fishing, and swimming as well as fascinating pictographs and archeological sites that are up to 10,000 years old. Boat tours on the reservoir and its tributary rivers can be arranged. You can also visit the Whitehead Memorial Museum, which includes several historic structures -- a trading post, log cabin, and other pioneer buildings -- plus exhibits on early African-American Texans, Native Americans, and the grave of Judge Roy Bean.
