This small town in the Texas Panhandle is the gateway to the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area. Lake Meredith was created with the building of the Sanford Dam on the Canadian River in 1964. Sailing and fishing are popular on the windy and well-stocked lake. Lake Meredith Aquatic and Wildlife Museum includes five aquariums full of native species and several dioramas depicting other local flora and fauna. On the shores of the lake, you can visit Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument, where you'll find 250 quarries that were mined by Native Americans for 12,000 years.
