Car

Even though traffic is a major problem, a car is nearly a necessity in sprawling Houston. Other forms of transportation are costly (taxis) or confusing at best (buses). The city is surrounded by the Interstate 610 beltway. Downtown is located at the intersection of Interstates 10 and 45.

Public Transport

Bus: Metro, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) serves the city and suburbs. Cost per ride is generally $1. A Park and Ride service is available to bring commuters in from the suburbs. Prices vary. (713-635-4000)

Taxi: Taxis are expensive. They can be hailed with difficulty on the street. Try finding them at hotels and terminals. To order by phone, try United (713-699-0000) or Yellow (713-236-1111).

Airport

Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH)

William P. Hobby Airport (HOU)

Houston - George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) (281-230-3100) is 22 miles north of the city. William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) (713-640-3000) is on the southeast side about seven miles from the central business district. Expect to take at least 45 minutes to reach either. Rush hour times can easily double. Scheduled bus service between the two airports is provided by Airport Express for about $24 per person.

Transportation from the airports to Houston and related destinations:

Shuttle: Express Shuttle provides service to various downtown locations leaving every 15 to 45 minutes between 6:15 AM and 11:15 PM. Cost is $23 for adults. Children's tickets are $10. (713-523-8888)

Limousine: Galveston Limousine leaves about every other hour between 10:30 AM and 9 PM taking passengers to Galveston and nearby communities. The cost is $35 to any hotel. (409-740-5466)

William P. Hobby Airport

Bus: Metro 50 bus runs downtown from 4:51 AM until 12:14 AM. The 50-minute trip costs $1.
