Although not named for Lillie Langtry, the famous music hall star of the late 1800s, this town on the Rio Grande was the home of Judge Roy Bean, the controversial "Law West of the Pecos," who idolized the actress and named his bar "The Jersey Lily" in her honor. You can explore Bean's life and times at the Judge Roy Bean Visitor Center which contains his combination saloon/courtroom, historical dioramas, and a botanical center with a wide variety of native desert plants. East of town, you can picnic at a scenic overlook high above the canyon of the Pecos River where it meets the Rio Grande, now part of the Amistad International Reservoir. Further to the east, Seminole Canyon State Park features 4,000-year-old pictographs and a visitors center with displays on local natural history.
