This west Texas town, named in 1880 for its midpoint location between El Paso and Dallas, became a boomtown with the discovery of oil in 1923. The Permian Basin Petroleum Museum tells the story of the oil industry and its effects on Midland with models of oil rigs, historic photos, geological displays, and other exhibits. At the Confederate Air Force and American Airpower Heritage Museum, you'll find an exceptional collection of air-worthy World War II aircraft from the U.S., England, Germany, and Japan. You can also visit the Museum of the Southwest which concentrates on preserving the art and cultural heritage of the American southwest. Exhibits include paintings, sculpture, and ceramics as well as archeological artifacts and a planetarium.
