Originally a stop on the Texas & Pacific Railroad, Odessa, like nearby Midland, is a desert oil town relying on the underground wealth of the Permian Basin. The town is the home of Odessa College where a re-created Elizabethan theater, the Globe of the Great Southwest, presents the works of William Shakespeare in authentic 17th-century surroundings. A replica of Anne Hathaway's cottage in Statford-upon-Avon is also on campus. On the campus of the University of Texas, the Ellen Noel Art Museum of the Permian Basin features a sculpture garden and rotating art exhibits.
You can also visit the Presidential Museum for displays of campaign memorabilia and a collection of miniature First Ladies dressed and coiffed as they would have been for the Inaugural Ball. The former home of George H.W. and George W. Bush is next door. Other historic homes include the White-Pool House Museum and Parker House Museum. The American Airpower Heritage Museum preserves a substantial collection of World War II artifacts, aircraft and original aviation nose art. Ten miles west of town, stroll around the nation's second largest meteor crater, some 550 feet in diameter.
