Port Aransas, located on Mustang Island, was first occupied by the Karankawa Indians approximately 500 years ago. Today, Port Aransas is a refreshing getaway with a wide variety of accommodations and attractions. The island itself was a favorite fishing spot of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and fishing remains a popular draw here. Fishing trips, pier fishing, sport angling, and wade fishing are all available. The waters of the Gulf and of Corpus Christi Bay are prime spots which also lure surfers and skin divers. Port Aransas can be reached by a free ferry or by causeway from Corpus Christi. Horseback riding is also a nice diversion here, and there are 18 miles of beachfront. There are unique gift shops and fine restaurants in the town once your beachcombing is done.
Mustang Island State Park offers scenic views and good hiking. This is one of the top spots along the Texas coast for birding. Whooping cranes winter here. Every February, the 'Celebration of Whooping Cranes and Other Birds' festival features birding tours, speakers, nature-related trade show, and art/photography workshops.
