This petroleum-refining center on Sabine Lake, 11 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico, attracts outdoorsmen year-round to its abundant fresh and salt water fishing opportunities. Pleasure Island offers 100 square miles of fishing levees in Sabine Lake. Among the impressive mansions you can tour in the city's historic district are the Pompeiian Villa, Rose Hill Manor, and White Haven.
Other attractions here include the Gates Memorial Library, the Museum of the Gulf Coast (with its diverse array of exhibits relating to the history of the area), and the Southeast Texas Musical Heritage Museum (which memorializes music stars from Port Arthur, including Janis Joplin). In nearby Nederland, the Windmill Museum celebrates the town's Dutch heritage and the life of that town's favorite native son, singer Tex Ritter.
Along the Gulf Coast, you'll find Sabine Pass Battleground State Historic Park, where a small, land-based Confederate force defeated a much larger Union naval force in 1863. Nearby, the McFadden and Texas Point national wildlife reserves and Sea Rim State Park offer myriad opportunities for wildlife viewing, hiking, camping, swimming, and other outdoors recreation.
