Car

You'll find San Antonio easy to navigate by car; the downtown is compact and you may even find walking preferable. If driving, look to the intersection of Main and Commerce as your point of reference for the street-numbering system. Main Avenue is the city's dividing line between east and west street numbers, and Commerce Street divides north and south. The grid system doesn't necessarily work in the northeast quadrant, where streets tend to veer with the river and freeway. Cars can be rented at the airport and elsewhere in the city, with national firms represented.

Public Transport

Streetcar: For $0.80 you can hop aboard rubber-tired streetcars designed to look like antique trolleys and follow one of four routes around popular destinations in the city; maps are available at any visitor's center (call 210-362-2020 or 800-447-3372 for information).

Bus: The VIA Metropolitan Transit system provides bus service all over the city. Base fare is $0.80, with an additional $0.15 for transfers; express routes cost $1.60. The system does not offer all-night service, but buses remain in operation in the downtown area until about 11:30 pm. Exact change required. For schedule and route information, call 210-362-2020.

Taxi: While taxis can sometimes be hailed in the streets in the downtown area, you'll have the best luck finding one at the cab stands near the hotels on the Paseo del Rio or by calling for a pick-up. Companies include Yellow Checker (210-222-2222). Fares include a $1.70 drop charge plus $2.02 per mile with no additional charges for extra passengers or luggage; there is a one-dollar surcharge for late-night service, and a fifty-cent surcharge for service from the airport.

Airport

San Antonio International Airport (SAT)

San Antonio International Airport (SAT) is just 20 minutes from downtown.

Transportation from the airport to downtown San Antonio:

The major hotels provide limo service, so be sure to see if it's included with your stay. VIA Metropolitan Transit offers express bus service during certain peak hours for $1.60. A trip by taxi will cost about $20.
