Floating two miles off the Texas mainland, the soft white-sand beaches and clear turquoise waters of South Padre are a true get away. Nearly 100 condominium complexes, several hotels and a variety of rental houses line the beachfront on this half-mile-wide sliver of land. North of town, the road parallels a wildly beautiful stretch of undeveloped beach. Sunning, swimming, surfing, shell collecting, strolling and sand-castle building--all enjoyed at a leisurely pace--are the bill of fare for this unpretentious resort area. Fishing is also a favored pursuit, with excellent bay and surf fishing as well as deep-sea excursions. At Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, across the bay, you can observe roseate spoonbills, peregrine falcons, great blue herons and brown pelicans.
