Since East and West McAllen joined forces just prior to 1910, the city's population has grown from 150 to more than 66,000. There are a number of early-20th-century structures here, including the old Southern Pacific Railroad Depot (1927) and the First United Methodist Church (1928). Charming city parks abound, including historic Archer Park, which hosts annual events such as Candlelight Posada, Shakespeare in the Park, and Movies in the Park.
The Veteran's War Memorial of Texas is an impressive circular site with commemorative areas dedicated to WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and All Wars. The McAllen International Museum (956-682-1564) has a variety of educational displays on arts, culture, and science.
PalmView Golf Course (956-687-9591) offers 18 holes of championship golf, a driving range, a putting green, and a short game practice area. The city has a number of public swimming pools as well. If you're road tripping in the Rio Grande Valley or along the Padre Island National Seashore, McAllen is worth a stop for diversion and recreation.
