You'll find loads of excellent skiing at the state's first ski resort, created in 1938. Alta's original boom occurred with the discovery of silver in the 1860s when 5,000 miners and their families lived here. In summer, enjoy hiking and mountain biking among beautiful wildflowers.
Two miles down the canyon, Snowbird is the closest ski resort to Salt Lake City, and the state's highest -- topping out at 11,000 feet. In summer, you can rent mountain bikes and ride the lifts to biking trails.
If you prefer to stay in your car and look at scenery, UT 210, through Little Cottonwood Canyon, is one of the prettiest drives over the Wasatch Range.
No snowboarding is allowed here.
