The tiny community of Bluff, founded by Mormon pioneers in 1880, was the first European settlement in southeast Utah. The historic district contains 42 buildings, many of them houses which date from the first pioneers. The sandstone columns known as the Navaho Twins tower overhead, part of the line of bluffs from which the town takes its name. From here, you can visit Hovenweep National Monument, Monument Valley, and six groups of Pueblo ruins on the Navajo Indian Reservation. The area is full of ancient castles, towers, irrigation structures, cliff dwellings, pueblos, and petroglyphs that are more than 1,000 years old. Bluff is also a popular put-in spot for rafting on the San Juan River. Mountain bike enthusiasts welcome on the slick rock trails in Bluff.
