Brigham Young, who spent his winters here, chose St. George for Utah's first-to-be-completed Mormon Temple. St. George is still popular in winter for people craving warmth and sunshine. You can visit the Mormon Temple, the Brigham Young Winter Home (1873), which is furnished as it would have been in the 19th century, the home of Jacob Hamblin (1861), who was noted for his efforts to bring peace between the Mormon settlers and local Indian tribes, and the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum.
During the summer, popular Broadway productions are performed at the 2,000-seat Tuacahn Amphitheatre in the spectacular redrock Canyon of the Gods. Snow Canyon State Park, northwest of the city, does not have snow but it does have interesting volcanic features including lava caves and cinder cones. There are dozens of golf courses in the area and St. George is 45 minutes from Zion National Park.
