Southwest Virginia Museum at Big Stone Gap exhibits pioneer and Indian relics, household and farm implements, and dioramas of mountain life in the 1890s. The home of novelist John Fox, Jr. (1863-1919) is open to the public, and his Trail of the Lonesome Pine 0 is dramatized in an outdoor musical production from late June through Labor Day weekend at a playhouse adjacent to the June Tolliver House, home of the heroine of the drama. The Harry W. Meador, Jr., Coal Museum features exhibits and objects collected by the late executive of a local coal company. The Big Stone Gap Walking Tour includes 14 points of interest, including four Virginia and National Historic Landmarks. The town visitor center is housed in a historic Interstate 101 train car that was built in 1870 for the South Carolina and Georgia Railroad; most of its original fixtures are intact.
