Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States, founded and designed the University of Virginia, which he called his "Academical Village." The University's Rotunda, Colonnades, and Pavilion Garden have been designated as a World Heritage Site. Nearby, Monticello, the home Jefferson designed, is an architectural masterpiece, reminding visitors of his talent and creativity. Also nearby are Ash Lawn-Highland, home of his friend James Monroe, the restored Michie Tavern (ca. 1784), and Montpelier, James Madison's beautiful estate. Children love the Virginia Discovery Museum. Adults can tour 20 wineries along the Monticello Wine Trail. Charlottesville's historic downtown offers diverse shopping, dining and entertainment venues.
