The Shenandoah Valley town of Front Royal is at the northern entrance to the 105-mile Skyline Drive that winds south along the scenic crest of Shenandoah National Park. The town's role in the Civil War is remembered at the Warren Rifles Confederate Museum, which features military paraphrenalia and personal effects of Stonewall Jackson and other historical figures. You can also tour the cottage of Belle Boyd, the Confederate spy who lived and operated here. Skyline Caverns is noted for its rare and beautiful cave flowers, called anthodites, as well as clear underground streams and cascades. The nearby Shenandoah River offers myriad opportunities for floating, bass fishing, and other outdoors recreation. Raymond R. Guest Shenandoah River State Park is more than 2,000 acres big and has more than 5 miles of river frontage. There are five golf courses and eight wineries in the area as well.
