Hampton is the oldest continuously occupied English-speaking settlement in the United States, settled in 1610, three years after the founding of Jamestown. Jefferson Davis was imprisoned in moat-encircled Fort Monroe after the Civil War; Casemate Museum tells the story of the Civil War battle of the Merrimac and the Monitor in Hampton Roads. Virginia Air & Space Center, where you can see a moon rock, the Apollo 12 command module, and the spacesuit worn by Alan Shepard, is the visitor center for NASA Langley Research Center and Langley Air Force Base. Visit Hampton University Museum, and a restored carousel (1920). Take a boat tour to pre-Civil War Fort Wool or for a view of Blackbeard's Point or thrill to NASCAR/Winston racing at Langley Speedway.
Hampton Museum traces 400 years of Hampton's history.
"Miss Hampton II" Harbor tour includes narrative and view of Fort View and Blackbeards's Point and extensive list of other sites.
Cousteau Society Northern American Headquarters is on the downtown waterfront. It is free and you can tour galleries with images and artifacts from Cousteau's expeditions.
St. John's Church, established in 1610, is the oldest continuous English-speaking parish in the U.S.
