Picturesque and historic Leesburg was founded in 1758. Take a walking tour of the many fine homes and buildings that reflect the town's Colonial heritage. Visit Dodona Manor, the home of General George C. Marshall, and the Thomas Balch Library, both in the downtown historic district. Nearby, the Loudon Museum offers interesting history exhibits. Morven Park, a 1,200-acre estate, has a magnificent mansion, fine gardens, nature trails, the Winmill Carriage Museum, and Museum of Hounds & Hunting. Another historic mansion, Oatlands (1803), offers a 261-acre estate with formal gardens and one of the nation's finest boxwood collections. The Smithsonian Naturalist Center is a hands-on study center with some 30,000 natural history and anthropological specimens for use by budding scientists and artists.
