For a glimpse of Lynchburg's history, visit the Lynchburg Museum at the restored Greek Revival-style Old Court House (1855). Of historic interest are Miller-Claytor House (1791) in Riverside Park and Point of Honor (1815), a restored mansion overlooking the James River. Randolph-Macon Woman's College, the first accredited college for women in Virginia, boasts a lovely campus filled with interesting architecture, including the Maier Museum of Art, with a fine American art collection. Visit the Old City Cemetery(with a museum) and Sandusky House, an old plantation taken over and used as a Union headquarters during the Battle of Lynchburg. Nearby is octagonal Poplar Forest, a retreat home designed, built, and lived in by Thomas Jefferson.
