If you want to see the largest naval installation in the world, take a guided bus tour of Norfolk Naval Base. Navy personnel give a running commentary on the hundreds of submarines, aircraft carriers, training centers, and Navy planes on base. Visits to selected ships in port are available on weekends. Accessible via TRT tour bus or trolley or by going directly to the Naval Base Tour Office. (757-444-7367)

Gray Line Tours offers historic tours of Norfolk, as well as day trips to Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. (757-853-6480)

A one-hour ride with Norfolk Explorers' Trolley Tours includes historic sites and other cultural attractions. Passengers may disembark at the Chrysler Museum of Art, the General Douglas MacArthur Memorial, numerous other points of interest, and resume riding on later trolleys. Tours run late May through late September. (757-640-6300)

Take narrated harbor and Elizabeth River cruises on the topsail schooner American Rover (757-627-7245). See the inner harbor, shipyards, naval base, and historic Fort Norfolk from the paddle-wheel replica Carrie B (757-393-4735). Every thirty minutes you can take the Elizabeth River Ferry, a pedestrian ferry, to Portsmouth (757-640-6300). And for narrated lunch cruises, as well as luxurious dinner cruises with live entertainment, try the Spirit of Norfolk (757-627-7771).
