Portsmouth's strategic location has made it militarily important since the American Revolution when the town was bombarded and burned by the British. You can take a walking tour of the historic Old Towne, which includes the Trinity Episcopal Church (1762), the city's oldest building, and Hill House, built in the early 1800s and little altered over the intervening years. In Old Towne, you'll also find the Courthouse Galleries, with visual art exhibits, the Naval Shipyard Museum, with models of historic ships and exhibits tracing the history of the U.S. Navy, and the Lightship Portsmouth Museum, dedicated to those who served aboard floating lighthouses. The achievements of noted Virginia athletes are celebrated at the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum. You can also visit the Children's Museum of Virgina where two full floors of interactive exhibits on the arts and sciences stimulate young minds.
