Step back in time to a thriving 18th-century community when you visit America's largest living history museum. Painstaking research has turned back the clock to a time when Williamsburg was Virginia's Colonial capital and a powerful center of politics, commerce and culture. In the meticulously restored, 301-acre historic area, you may enjoy gardens, visit shops, and walk the same streets as did Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Patrick Henry. Continuous activities and special events re-create the atmosphere of the 18th-century town. Eighty-eight buildings are original; the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation has reconstructed 500 others. Notable restorations include the Governor's Palace, with its formal gardens; the Capitol Building; the Courthouse; Bruton Parish Church; George Wythe House; and Shields and Raleigh taverns. Authentically furnished homes stand along the Palace Green. Craft shops where workers in Colonial costumes ply the old trades of printing, blacksmithing, wigmaking and other pursuits are fascinating. View rare antique masterworks at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Gallery. Explore 19th-century American objects at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum. In the heart of the city, the College of William and Mary has a lovely Wren Building.
