Nearby Stratford Hall Plantation, birthplace of Robert E. Lee, is now a restored Colonial plantation, operated as in the early 19th-century. A large water-powered mill grinds grain, and there is an old coach collection. Nearby is Ingleside Plantation and Winery, and Westmoreland State Park, which has a sand beach and a pool and offers fishing, boating, and hiking.
Believed to be the oldest museum in the Northern Neck, the Westmoreland County Museum and Library, Inc. was established in 1939 in the Court Square. It is the permanent home of Charles Wilson Peale's portrait of William Pitt, Earl of Chatham (1768); and it provides artistic, recreational and educational facilities.
