This historic community in the Blue Ridge Highlands was settled in the 1760s, following the explorations of Daniel Boone. Wandering through the city's historic district, you'll encounter Victorian-era buildings filled with restaurants, inns, arts and crafts, and artists at work. King Regional Arts Center features the works of regional artists, folk art, and traveling exhibitions. The Barter Theatre, founded during the Great Depression as a way for actors to trade performances for food and goods, presents a wide variety of performances year round. The 34-mile Virginia Creeper Trail is popular with hikers, cyclists, and riders. In August, the Virginia Highlands Festival celebrates the culture and arts of the Appalachians.
