Situated at the southern end of Banks Lake, Coulee City marks the place where 19th-century railroad and stagecoach lines crossed the Grand Coulee. The massive Dry Falls, which separates the upper and lower Grand Coulees, is nearby. At the end of the last Ice Age, this 400-foot high, 3.5-mile-long cliff was the site of a vast waterfall that would have drawfed the flow of Niagara Falls. Sun Lakes State Park below the Dry Falls offers camping, boating, swimming, and fishing. On Banks Lake, which was created with the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam, you'll find Steamboat Rock State Park. You can hike to the top of Steamboat Rock, a 1,000-foot-high butte that was once an island in the Columbia River. Summer Falls State Park on man-made Billy Clapp Lake has picnicking and fishing but no swimming. The falls generated by the local irrigation system only flow during the summer, hence the name. Home of the Last Stand Rodeo and Coulee City Rodeo Association, Coulee City also hosts a three day Memorial Day event, including a bull-o-rama, cowpie jog, and parade.
