The county seat of Klickitat County is the commercial center for an agricultural, wheat-growing region above the Columbia River. In Goldendale Observatory State Park, you can see and use one of the largest reflecting telescopes available to the general public. The 24.5-inch Cassegrain is complemented by several smaller instruments. The Klickitat County Historical Museum occupies the 1902 Presby House which features fine architectural details and a collection of pioneeer artifacts. A few miles south, you can visit the Maryhill Museum of Art. This famous collection in the former home of entrepenuer Sam Hill features works by Rodin, Russian religious icons, and French art glass and mannequins as well as European and American paintings. A replica of Stonehenge, built by Sam Hill as a memorial to those who lost their lives in World War I, is nearby.
