The fertile valley of the Puyallup River, flowing from the slopes of Mount Rainier, produces millions of daffodils, tulips, irises and crocuses annually. Puyallup's Daffodil Festival kicks off the season in April. One of the area's largest growers, the Van Lierop Bulb Farms, presents a spring garden with hundreds of varieties on display. The town's Arts Downtown outdoor gallery displays more than 50 pieces of sculpture; a walking-tour map with information on each piece is available. You can also visit the Ezra Meeker Mansion, a 17-room Victorian manse built by the town's founder and hops-growing pioneer. The state's largest fair, the Puyallup Fair, held at the fairgrounds in September, draws a million people to its concerts, exhibits, carnival rides, and livestock displays. A smaller version, the Puyallup Spring Fair, takes place in conjunction with the Daffodil Festival. In summer, the religious pageant "Jesus of Nazareth" employs a cast and crew of several hundred for its open-air amphitheatre production.
