Seattle WA Things to Do

Attractions

The downtown monorail will whisk you to the Seattle Center, site of the 1962 World's Fair, in just 90 seconds. There you can visit the Space Needle, Pacific Science Center, the Children's Museum, the Experience Music Project, and the Fun Forest amusement park.

On the waterfront are the Seattle Aquarium, nautical shops, seafood restaurants, excursion boats, and the ferry terminal. From pier 56, you can take a narrated harbor cruise to Blake Island State Park and Tillicum Village, where a baked salmon dinner and program of spectacular Northwest Indian dancing awaits.

Explore the craft booths, fresh produce stands, fish markets, and secondhand shops in the fascinating jumble of Pike Place Market. Or, for the sleek and modern, shop at Westlake Center and Rainier Square. Enjoy a medley of Asian cultures among the exotic shops, grocers, restaurants, and festivals found in the International District.

The historic heart of the city, Pioneer Square is a remnant of "Old Seattle," with cobblestone streets and colorful outdoor cafes. Take the Underground Tour to buried Victorian streets and stores, abandoned and covered after the fire of 1889.

Washington Park Arboretum, MOHAI (Museum of History and Industry), and the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture are all near the University of Washington, along the shores of Lake Washington. You can also visit the outstanding Seattle Art Museum, Woodland Park Zoo, the Museum of Flight, Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, and the Nordic Heritage Museum.

At the Chittenden Locks, you'll see surging salmon struggle to scale the fish ladder and reach their fresh water spawning grounds while enormous seagoing vessels pass nearby.

The city's richly diverse cultural scene includes the Seattle Opera and Pacific Northwest Ballet, both of whom perform at the new Opera House which opened at Seattle Center in 2003; the traditional and contemporary figurative art that can be seen at the Frye Art Museum; and the Wing Luke Asian Museum in the International District.

A variety of newer sports facilities have given local fans more reason to cheer. Since 1999, baseball's Mariners have played under the semi-retractable roof of Safeco Field, while the Seahawks have entertained their football rivals at Qwest Field since 2002. The Sounders of the USL also play soccer at Qwest Field. At Key Arena in the Seattle Center, you'll find the Supersonics of the NBA, the Storm of the WNBA, and the Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League. For exciting Pac-10 football action, the University of Washington Huskies play at Husky Stadium on the beautiful shores on Lake Washington.

Seattle has wonderful parks for hiking, biking, in-line skating, boating, and swimming. The largest, Discovery Park, offers a wealth of nature-oriented activities and programs.
