Spokane's downtown area, bounded on the north by the Spokane River, is easily accessible from Interstate 90, which roughly skirts the downtown's southern edge. Spokane is best traveled by car, and the street layout is easy to follow. With downtown as your reference point, remember that Sprague Avenue, which parallels Riverfront Park, is the east-west dividing line between streets designated either north or south; Division Street (U.S. Highway 2 north of I-90) divides streets designated east and west; and numbered east-west avenues (e.g., First Avenue, etc.) indicate the number of blocks south a location is from the northern edge of downtown near the river. You'll find six major car rental agencies at Spokane International Airport (and two more off-site). City maps are available from the city's Visitor Center at 201 W. Main (509-248-3230).
