At the southern end of Puget Sound, the transportation hub Tacoma offers a revitalized downtown that merges well-preserved historic buildings with an impressive new Museum District. Three major museums -- Tacoma Art Museum, the Museum of Glass, and the Washington State History Museum -- make up a museum triangle linked by the spectacular Chihuly Bridge of Glass and historic Union Station, also filled with pieces by Tacoma native Dale Chihuly.
Other distinctive museums here include LeMay: America's Car Museum at Marymount, Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum, Job Carr Cabin Museum, and the Working Waterfront Maritime Museum. At Fort Nisqually Living History Museum in Fort Defiance Park, you can meet costumed docents re-enacting life in an 1855 Hudson Bay Company fur trading post. The park also encompasses an outstanding zoo and aquarium, scenic drives, Japanese and rose gardens, hiking trails, saltwater beaches, and a marina for boating and fishing.
