Located on the north bank of the Columbia River, Vancouver is the oldest permanent non-native settlement in the Northwest. The Hudson's Bay Company established Fort Vancouver in 1825 as its Pacific Northwest fur trading headquarters. The Fort Vancouver National Historic Site contains several reconstructed buildings, including the stockade built by the Hudson Bay Company that helped draw pioneers to the Northwest. You can also visit the Clark County Historical Museum which contains extensive pioneer and Chinook Indian artifacts. The museum building also houses the fascinating S.P. & S. Railway Museum.
Pearson Air Museum displays historic aircraft and flight memorabilia at the oldest operating airfield in the U.S. On Officer's Row, you'll see the stately homes built to support the U.S. Army post during the 19th century. Listed on the National Register of Historic Sites is Covington House, a log cabin dating from 1848 that once served as a school.
