Walla Walla takes its euphonious name from a Native American word meaning "many waters." A pleasant college town enhanced by well-cultivated parks and trees, Walla Walla offers a welcome respite from the monotonous landscape of much of eastern Washington. You can visit the Fort Walla Walla Museum Complex which preserves original and reconstructed pioneer buildings and historic agricultural tools and machinery. Kirkman House (1880) has period furnishings and interesting architectural details.
West of the city, the Whitman Mission National Historic Site presents the story of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman who operated a mission on Oregon Trail from 1836 until its tragic end in 1847. At the site, living history presenters demonstrate both pioneer and Native American arts and crafts. Other attractions include more than 70 wineries; Sunset Magazine named Walla Walla the best wine destination in 2005.
