Rich volcanic soil and more than 300 days of annual sunshine combine to make this one of the most prolific agricultural growing regions in the world. The orchards surrounding Yakima produce grapes, apples, cherries, pears, peaches, and apricots for shipment all over the continent; hops and mint are also produced in abundance. Many of the area's 50-some wineries are open for tours and tastings.
The Yakima Valley Museum features an exceptional collection of horse-drawn vehicles, as well as a memorial to U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas and other exhibits. You can ride the trolleys at the Yakima Electric Railway Museum. A tour of state-of-the-art plywood and sawmill operations is offered by Boise Cascade Corp. The extensive displays of the Central Washington Agricultural Museum are in nearby Union Gap. Fred Redmon Memorial Bridge, one of the nation's longest concrete spans, arches Selah Creek Canyon on I-82 north of the city.
