In 1882, this paper-manufacturing town on the Fox River became the first city in the United States to be powered by hydroelectricity. Hearthstone is a restored mansion believed to be the first house in the world to have used hydroelectric power. The town was the childhood home of escape artist Harry Houdini. At the Houdini Historical Center, you'll find a collection of photographs and artifacts from his shows. The center is part of the Outagamie Museum, where displays concentrating on technology include a burglar-proof bank of the 1930s and a 1920s newspaper room. You can also visit the Fox Cities Children's Museum, which has 18 interactive exhibits designed to engage young minds in the arts, sciences, and cultures of the world. Gordon Bubolz Nature Preserve offers abundant wildlife on its 782 acres. On the campus of Lawrence University, you can visit the dramatically post-modern Wriston Art Center.
